Spalding is the oldest, full-time sporting goods company in the United States. For 100 years, beginning in 1876, Spalding manufactured the official baseballs used exclusively by the Major Leagues. Spalding is also the official basketball of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Spalding World Wide Sports was a leader in the golf industry. The company was so successful that its golf segment accounted for two-thirds of its business and was spun off into what became the Top-Flite Company. This new Spalding division was also faced with implementing a demand-planning solution.

The director of demand planning and inventory management, Tim Bishop, had several options to choose from. The Demand Management Engine, a module of the John Galt Solutions’ Atlas Planning Suite, met all of his criteria and more. Bishop explained: “When I saw the ease-of-use, low maintenance, and competitive pricing of the Demand Management Engine, I saw a lot of bang for the buck in John Galt’s solution.”

With the John Galt Demand Management Engine, Spalding was provided with a solution that is user-friendly, scalable from itscurrent resources, and simple to integrate throughout the enterprise.

“With the Demand Management Engine, I can view my data any way that I need to with the click of a mouse. Other packages I looked at could not do the conversion I wanted,” said Bishop. “With less support required from the IT team at Spalding and the robust capability built into the product, I am now much more productive,” he added.

Some of the benefits Bishop anticipates in the near future are a long-term increase in forecast accuracy and the ability to manage the entire process, without getting bogged down with the technology. This will enable Spalding’s supply chain to respond to changes in the market quickly and easily.
